Comedy Isn't Funny Anymore
Onstage at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre (Venue #4)

Comedy Isn't Funny Anymore is a post-modern take on

the golden age of comedy.

Stephen Sim is funny. Caity Curtis is funny. They want you

to laugh. More than that, they want you to laugh at the

right parts of the show. How will you know when to

laugh? How will you determine when the funny is

happening? Is comedy even funny? Good luck, Audience

People.

These are two comedians. (CRUMBS, The Winnipeg

Are there more shows to see at the FRINGE? You bet. In fact, you should go see them all!

Next Act 2016 is coming to Winnipeg, Manitoba!
From August 2 – 6 improvisers from all over Canada will be joining the Next Act ensemble for 5 days and 5 nights of intense improv training and performances.

Winnipeg is known internationally for its unique style of long form improv. The Next Act Ensemble can expect to be challenged and charmed by the ‘Prairie Style’ improv experience. The Ensemble will be directed by Winnipeg improv legends, Aaron Merke (BUCKO), Stephen Sim (CRUMBS) and Caity Curtis.

CRUMBS moves on

So another Winnipeg IF... Improv Festival has come and gone. Another wave of amazing improv shows, workshops, guests and good times have washed over Winnipeg. Winnipeg and improv has been re-energized by the awesomeness of all all that performed and attended. Thank you Winnipeg. We say goodbye to Joe Bill (above) and all the guest who were here:

Instant Theatre from Vancouver

Business from Regina

Rapid Fire Theatre from Edmonton

Hey look, a bonus picture of Gord Tanner... we were happy to have Gord take part in his first ever Winnipeg improv festival.

The festival also included Kevin McDonald from that TV show in the 90's... you know, The Kids in the Hall.

Now it's time to dust off and move on.

Moving on to shows that still exist. Improv continues at the King's Head. The rumours are untrue, the show must go on.

Though there has been some unfortunate changes at the King's Head on Tuesdays, improv lives on and continues. The comedy shows on Tuesdays have been going on at the King's Head for going on 7 years and really was the instigator for all the comedy explosions rocking the city right now. So comedy lives, improv lives, the show lives on. And while CRUMBS goes away on tour, Outside Joke flies in and does their thing to keep the stage warm with improv.

See Outside Joke do their improv thing at the King's Head on:

Tue, Oct 15th
Tue, Nov 5th
Tue, Nov 19th

Also, check out the Outside Joke season of Yuks.
The next show is Nov 8th at the Gas Station Arts Centre. Of course, just click links and google to find out when all their shows are.

CRUMBS has a little bit of touring left in 2013. CRUMBS will be in Europe doing their shows and their workshops to all the wonderful Europeans.

Check that out HERE

CRUMBS will also be in Toronto for a festival with the National Theatre of the World. It will be amazing. It will be Dec 11th - 15th and it will be in a clickable link soon.

CRUMBS at the Berlin IMPRO Festival 2013

What can I say about Berlin that I haven't said already? Probably tons and tons. But let me just say, that what I'm writing here now is about the Berlin IMPRO Festival 2013 and not really the city. I was so busy with the festival to even think about going into the city to explore. I will wait until we return to Berlin later on in our tour to ride the U-bahn and explore, which just happens to be one of my favourite things.

CRUMBS were lucky enough to be at the very first Berlin IMPRO Festival way back in 2001. We also were lucky enough to be a part of almost every single festival since. I think we've missed two in the history of the festival. This festival was not only the epicentre of the CRUMBS improv earthquake across Europe, it is also the meeting point for a good number of European and North American improvisers and has fostered quite a good number of co-productions and collaborations that have heightened and forwarded the art form of improvisation internationally. I suppose what I'm trying to say is "I love this festival!".

This year at the Festival there were several projects that were undertaken as well as the showcase shows. CRUMBS did our own CRUMBS Classic showcase as well as the European premier of Lee White's Improv Game Show format (which was named "Professor Spontaneous presents: The IQ Improv Challenge… or something as equally confusing and silly) and our improv show with the audience (called "Your 15 Minutes of Fame"). All three shows went quite well, though there were some particularly nice words uttered about the improv show we do with the audience. First let me explain where this show comes from. It comes from Stephen McIntyre, who along with Robert Slade (who just happened to travel to Berlin and visit us at the Festival this year!!!), were the first improv that CRUMBS ever experienced. The basic idea is, that to prove that anyone can improvise and that you don't really need "rules", McIntyre would do improv scenes with audience members who had never done it before. These were some of the earliest improv shows we had ever done. Now, being the inexperienced improvisers that we were at the time, it is fascinating to look back on these shows and realize that it was an amazing learning environment. Here we were, new to improv, hopped up on fear and adrenalin, performing with someone who was infinitely more afraid than we were. We had to learn to be more calm than our partner, to take care of our partner and patiently let the flow happen. It was only when we looked back that we could see that this "crazy improv show" was what formed the foundation to our relaxed style.

The 15 Minutes of Fame show does show up in several different forms. We do improv scenes with audience members as an interactive improv show for private corporate gigs. We've also done the show with audience members where we just ask anyone to get up and do a scene. But the origin of the idea and the seed of the beauty is doing improvised scenes with audience members who have never done improv before… wait, haven't even taken a class… hold on, haven't even set foot on a stage. To do this we create a safe place on the stage, we never force anyone, and we patiently wait for someone to join us onstage. Sometimes this takes… a long time. We calmly wait. Then we calmly do the scene. The audience calmly goes wild when it's over!

At the Berlin IMPRO Festival, when we did this show. It was magic. A big thank you to the festival for being brave and believing in this show, also a big thank you to all the volunteers who were brave enough to join us and believing in CRUMBS.

The festival this year had over 40 improvisers from across the world. Yes, I said over 40, and I said world. This year we had a group from Mumbai, India doing a Bollywood improv show. They also happened to teach a Bollywood workshop, I happened to take the workshop, and I also happened to perform in one of the Bollywood shows. So that means that I sang and danced in a Bollywood show. It's going on my resume.

Have I mentioned yet how much I love this festival? So many great people to work with. So many great shows to be apart of. So many great audiences to perform for.

Another great thing that I should gush about is the opportunity in this festival to take on projects. This year, the big project was to do a show in one location but in three different time eras. We did our show in an old Markthalle (market hall) in Kreuzberg (a neighbourhood of Berlin). We did the show in three distinct and important eras in the history of Berlin and the area. 1981 (during a squatters meeting), 1948 (int he time after WW2 and just before the Air Bridge) and 1926 (which were some wold times). The show involved a cast of more than 40, full costumes, and a multi-focused multi-staged play area. We had tap dancing, live singing, a real boxing match, swing dancers, American soldiers questioning audience members, and hundreds of audience members transported through time. The show, at times, felt more like a LARPing time machine happening than anything theatre-like. It was a great time. And for me personally, it was just fun dressing up like an American soldier in 1948 and acting like I owned the place (I also rocked a moustache). Thank you to the festival and all those involved in this monster experiment.

An American soldier circa 1948.
 Matt and Naomi dancing (1926 & 1981)
Bjorn and I (no, he's not a Nazi, it's theatre!)
Lee hosting the Improv Game Show.
Lee (The Hippy) and Randy Dixon (the General)
The volunteer cast of our "15 Minutes of Fame" show.
Me and some of the improvisers from Mumbai.
 Naomi and I.

At the end of the festival. It was time to sleep… for, like a second. We had to now get to Graz, Austria to hook up with our friends Jacob and Trixi (and their daughter Lili Rose) to work on a CRUMBS co-production with Theater Im Bahnhof… but hey, that's a whole other post. Next time.

CRUMBS and the Winnipeg Improv Festival

So the Winnipeg if... Improv Festival is just about to start. The theatre is getting ready for awesomeness on the stage. The posters are being hung on lamp posts with care. Out of town guests are packing all their funniest underwear. The local improvisers and comedians are crossing off the days on their calendars. Audiences are starting to camp outside the Gas Station Arts Centre for tickets like they're a brand new Apple product. And finally, Winnipeg prepares for another festival honouring the artform of making it up.

As you may or may not know CRUMBS is behind the scenes making sure all the "making up" goes off without a hitch. This post is all about where you can catch CRUMBS while the festival starts up and roars into gear.

Monday, Nov 5th at the King's Head Pub
Before the festival even starts you can catch CRUMBS as guests on the Week Thus Far TV show live taping for Shaw TV.

Tuesday, Nov 6th at the King's Head Pub 9pm
The official launch of the Improv Festival. This show is hosted by CRUMBS and features some of the acts that will be showcased in the festival. The show is free and the party continues after the show with some music, some food, some drinks and gooooooood times.

Wednesday, Nov 7th at the Gas Station Theatre 8pm
The Dungeons & Dragons Improv show will feature Lee White of CRUMBS. But you should really check out this amazingly bloody and hilarious show.

Thursday, Nov 8th at the Gas Station Theatre 8pm
The Comedy Showcase show will feature the likes of Mark Little (of Picnicface fame) and Joe Bill (from Chicago) as well as the sketch comedy of Hot Thespian Action (Winnipeg Comedy Festival) and Bucko (from Vancouver). Wait, there's also the local stand-up of Aisha Alfa, Mike Green and Matt Nightengale. No CRUMBS? No problem. This show's gonna rule.

The video that made Picnicface internet famous:

Hot Thespian Action is from Winnipeg?

Friday, Nov 9th at the Gas Station Theatre 8pm
The Mainstage show will feature CRUMBS and the rest of the amazing festival ensemble (Mark Little, Joe Bill, Kirsten Rasmussen, Julian Faid, Jessie McPhee, Fraz Wiest and members of Outside Joke). What's that? Also the amazing Dj Hunnicutt? Okay.

Wait! If you stick around after the show you'll see that there's a late night show that starts at 11 p.m. at the theatre. It's Lee White's game show themed improv show "The Big Smart Improv Show". You'll love it!

Saturday, Nov 10th at the Gas Station Theatre 8pm
The Mainstage show on Saturday will also feature CRUMBS and the festival ensemble. New forms, now shows, new people to fall in love with.

CRUMBS loves the Winnipeg Improv Festival

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Winnipeg iF... Improv Festival 2011 is just about here. That time of year when CRUMBS teams up with the local heroes of Winnipeg improv and we invite fabulous improv players from all over to come to our home town and show them our prairie hospitality.

This year we have guests coming from:

Atlanta, Georgia
Victoria, BC
Edmonton, AB
Toronto, ON

The Festival kicks off at the King's Head Pub on Sept 2oth for the annual Free Sampler Platter.

The rest of the fest then takes place at the Gas Station Theatre (at the corner of River & Osborne) Sept 22nd + 23rd +24th with amazing shows!

Be sure to watch a special Improv Festival episode of "The Week Thus Far" as CRUMBS is featured. You can watch this local show on ShawTV.

Now enjoy some videos of CRUMBS while they were at the Berlin International Impro Festival this spring.

CRUMBS is 1/2 way through the Fringe

So the CRUMBS show is still running at the Winnipeg Fringe. We have done 5 shows and we have 5 shows left. This is the "hump" and we now slide down the slippery slope to the light at the end of the tunnel. (Is that enough of some mixed metaphors for you?). Now, in a run of 10 improv shows at least one show should be a "stinker", at least one show should "bomb". So far we haven't done this, we have only put on stellar shows, to use the proper term, we are on point.

We have explored
: elevator repair, bikini waxing, dog sleds, butchers, smart pigs, The Mother Tree, hippies, garden gnomes, Antartica, and saunas. So as you can see, no topic is left untouched. We are brave brave improvisers.

We have 5 shows left:

Tuesday, July 19th at 10:15pm
Wednesday, July 20th at 9pm
Thursday, July 21st at 10:15pm
Friday, July 22nd at 11:15pm
Saturday, July 23rd at 11:15pm

Reviews? Well, if you even follow or believe the reviews. Personally, I find I need to judge for myself.
